Challenge

When recruiting timelines compressed and On-Campus Interviewing moved to a direct-apply model, law school Career Services Offices had to rethink how they advise students: faster timelines, less structure, and higher stakes for every early conversation. Students suddenly needed to make consequential career decisions earlier, with less guidance and less time to make them.

For Michelle Parsons, Assistant Dean of Career Services at Vanderbilt Law School, the shift required the office to change their programming and advising strategies. With a team of seven supporting one of the smallest T14 classes in the country, around 170 students per class, Vanderbilt's Career Services office is built for individualized attention. But that model only works when the tools do too.

Vanderbilt Law School had been using another solution, a legacy legal recruiting database, but the experience was consistently frustrating. The tool that should have made advising easier was slowing the team down instead.

Approach

In early 2024, Vanderbilt made the switch to Firm Prospects. The difference was immediate.

"Every time we meet with a student for the first time in the fall, we immediately send them an FP report," Parsons said. "It takes me 20 seconds."

From orientation onward, every 1L receives a Firm Prospects report filtered by their target city and practice area, a curated picture of the alumni network they're about to tap. Instead of sending students into networking season with a blank page, Vanderbilt sends them in with a roadmap.

During appointments, the platform is open on the screen. When a student mentions a firm they're curious about, Parsons pulls it up live. When a student has multiple offers and needs to make a decision, she runs a side-by-side firm comparison, attrition rates, growth trajectory, practice group depth, and lets the data do the talking. "It changed the way we advise students," she said. "Pulling it up live during an appointment is incredibly helpful."

The nice thing about Firm Prospects is it's updated in real time.

Solution

The recruiting landscape has shifted, and with it, everything about how Career Services Offices need to operate. Students who once had a full year to explore firms are now making decisions in their 1L year. Some arrive at orientation already anxious about recruiting, and the window for thoughtful research has shrunk to weeks.

Firm Prospects didn't just help Vanderbilt keep up, it helped them stay ahead. By embedding the platform into the fall 1L programming, Vanderbilt gives students a structured starting point before the recruiting pressure peaks. By filtering alumni data by city and practice area, counselors can point students toward specific people to contact, specific firms to research, and specific questions to ask at networking events.

"It gives students a tangible starting point for networking and helps them organize their search," Parsons said.

Some students arrive knowing exactly what they want: brand-name firms, big markets, prestigious practices. Others are career changers looking for long-term cultural fit. Many don't know yet, and need a framework before they can even ask the right questions. Firm Prospects gives counselors something concrete to put in front of all three groups on day one.

What’s next

Since switching to Firm Prospects, Vanderbilt's Career Services team uses the platform daily during peak recruiting season. Access is shared with students a couple of weeks after orientation, comparisons run during offer-decision appointments, and alumni searches anchor every first advising session of the fall.

The platform has effectively extended the capacity of Vanderbilt's Career Services team advising around 170 students through the most compressed, high-stakes recruiting cycle in recent memory. In a market where every advising conversation counts, there's no room for friction. Firm Prospects eliminated it.
