AI Companies Emerging as Destination for Am Law 200 Lawyers, Firm Prospects Report Finds

AI companies including Harvey, Anthropic and OpenAI drew 46 lawyers from Am Law 200 firms in H1 2026
BOSTON – September 24, 2026 – Firm Prospects, the legal profession's leading talent and market intelligence platform, published the H1 2026 Lateral Market Report, which examines nearly 16,000 moves into and out of the Am Law 200, including more than 8,000 firm-to-firm moves. The report revealed AI companies are emerging as a distinct destination category for Am Law 200 lawyers, many of whom took on “legal engineer” roles.
“Law firm leaders must track the AI industry and its growing appetite for legal talent,” said Adam Braveman, CEO of Firm Prospects. “The emergence of new roles and career opportunities for associates could create new paths to partnerships. Our data shows where movement is concentrating and gives firm leaders signals about where to look closer.”
Findings from the H1 2026 Lateral Market Report include:
AI companies are a new destination.
The move in-house is nothing new for lawyers in the Am Law 200, but AI companies are emerging as a distinct destination category. The most notable aspect is the range of roles: 15 lawyers moved into “legal engineer” positions, alongside roles in research, go-to-market, and strategy. Harvey accounted for 22 moves, followed by Anthropic with eight, and OpenAI and Legora with five each. Five lawyers held partner-level titles at their prior firms, 40 were associates, and one was counsel.
Nearly one in eight firm-to-firm lateral movers arrived in the same month as at least two colleagues from the same origin firm.
At several major firms, those same-month clusters accounted for more than half of H1 firm-to-firm arrivals.
Same-month clusters skew senior.
Among same-month clusters, in which three or more lawyers moved along the same route in the same recorded month, 126 included at least two partners and carried 737 attorneys — 71.6% of cluster movers and 8.4% of all firm-to-firm moves.
Law firm arrivals fell from 5,493 in Q1 to 5,148 in Q2, a decrease of 6.3%.
Partner share of total arrivals also decreased slightly from 23.7% in Q1 to 23.1% in Q2; partner arrivals fell 8.8%, compared with a 3.5% decline for associates. Litigation remained the largest practice; New York, Washington, Los Angeles and Chicago accounted for 41.8% of all law firm arrivals.
The H1 2026 Lateral Market Report also includes key data points from the Firm Prospects Index, a recurring, citable benchmark of how elite legal talent moves across the AmLaw 200. It measures the actual flow of lawyers between law schools, firms and practice groups, built on proprietary data that competitors structurally lack. This includes:
Law School Pipeline — which leading firms draw from which schools, T14 and beyond.
Lateral Partner Moves — partner-level movement in and out of the top firms.
Group Moves — team and practice-group transitions across the market.
Retention & Attrition — where firms lose associates and where that talent lands.
Research Methodology
Firm Prospects analyzed its database, covering all 15,988 recorded moves into and out of the Am Law 200, including 8,804 firm-to-firm moves, between January 1 and June 30, 2026.
